Sunday, Sunday…the Great British Sunday Lunch

It seems there is something of a north/south divide when it comes to Sunday lunch. Surveys suggest more than one in five families in the south still sit down for a meal together on a Sunday, whereas fewer than 10% do so in the north.

This is even more surprising, given that the institution supposedly started in northern England, when during the industrial revolution, Yorkshire families left a cut of meat in the oven before going to church on a Sunday morning, so that it was ready to eat by the time they got home. Since Sunday was the one day the baker didn’t make bread, poorer families would often put a pot of meat in his oven to cook if they didn’t have the facilities at home. The meat would then last them the rest of the week. How sustainable is that?
