Have dinner by candlelight – join us for Earth Hour 2015

Celebrating Earth Hour 2010, Canada

Earth Hour is a global annual event, organised by the charity WWF, where hundreds of millions of people turn out the lights for an hour to show their commitment to conserving our planet’s natural resources.

Last year a record 162 countries took part, with over 9 million people in the UK alone. Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Edinburgh Castle and Wembley Stadium were among the landmarks that stood in the darkness for this hugely symbolic occasion.

Earth Hour is a chance for us to show we want to do our bit for the planet. And, as the WWF says, “that’s never been more vital”.

So here at The Green House, Bournemouth’s eco-friendly luxury boutique hotel, we will be showing we care by switching off all non-essential lighting this Saturday 28 March for Earth Hour 2015 – from 8.30 to 9.30pm – and lighting the candles.

Why not join us? Not only will you see the Green House and Arbor, our two AA-rosette restaurant, in a different – and completely magical – setting. It will also be a chance for us to show how it is possible for us to spoil you and your friends and family without spoiling this precious planet of ours.

As our regular guests know, the Green House was founded on the principle that we will use only resources that the Earth can spare. This goes not just for our lighting but also heating, water, wood for furniture and floors, carpets, food and drink… in other words, everything that we and our guests consume.

A great deal of thought and work goes into ensuring we minimise our environmental impacts while making sure the Green House always looks its absolute best and provides a welcoming and luxurious haven for our visitors.

For example, our lighting system is highly sophisticated, ensuring we use electricity (much of which we produce ourselves on site) as efficiently as possible while ensuring illumination is just right in our guest rooms and bathrooms, as well as communal and outside areas. We review our lighting policy regularly to improve on this, leading to year on year reductions in our energy consumption.

Of course, the food we eat also has a massive impact on the health of our planet – in fact, the WWF says it’s responsible for 30 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions.

That’s why the Green House’s environmental ethos extends to Arbor. In fact, we have just been voted the most environmentally-friendly restaurant in the UK in the 2015 Sustainable Restaurant Association awards.

All of which makes a candlelit dinner the perfect way for the Green House to celebrate Earth Hour 2015 in Bournemouth with our guests, enjoying wonderful food with that’s good for us and good for the planet too.

Of course, we will be just one extremely dim and distant point in a worldwide chain of Earth Hour participants. In a world hooked on spectacular, firework-frenzy celebrations, it’s hard to imagine that an event this invisible could be so uplifting and significant. But it is. So don’t be left out in the dark – come and join us for a magical and memorable evening at Arbor.

We will be switching off the lights in Arbor from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March. Guests will be given further details of the event at the time of booking and – discreetly – during the evening. Please call us on 01202 498900 for more information or to make a booking.
