With our fantastic beaches, beautiful countryside and great attractions there’s always a reason to come. But if you need extra inspiration, here is a flavour of some of the special summer events coming up – from the mildly eccentric to the seriously impressive.

20-23 August Bournemouth Air Show

It’s not too late to catch Bournemouth’s eighth annual air festival. Incredible display teams, Royal Marine beach assaults, awesome jets, pilots, Royal Navy, aircraft, helicopters, Royal Air Force, fireworks, entertainment, 3-miles of beach trading and ground displays, street entertainers, interactive military villages, live music, military bands and the Royal Marines… all ‘by the sea and completely free!’ Running until Sunday 23 August, the Festival site is open daily from 10am with displays starting late morning/ early afternoon.

2-6 September Great Dorset Steam Fair

A giant trip of nostalgia into the days of yesteryear, widely recognised as the leading event of its type in the world with 2,000 exhibits, 800 trade stalls and over 220 full size steam engines. Just find the village of Tarrant Hinton on the map, head in that direction and follow everyone else! 2015 sees the Great Dorset Steam Fair in its 47th year.

24 August – 5 September Festival of Seafood and Shellfish at Corfe Castle

Featuring world class south coast fish and shellfish from local suppliers – from Lobster to Cornish Sardines and Mussels – all against the backdrop of one of Britain’s most iconic and romantic ruined castles. There are daily specials and homemade dishes with freshly-delivered produce every day. Also a special children’s menu, large garden and car park. For table reservations call 01929 480357.

30 August Candles on the Cobb

A  dramatic and spectacular event illuminating the historic Cobb Harbour at Lyme Regis with 5000 tea-light candles, at the same time raising thousands of pounds for local and national charities. The tea-lights are uniformly positioned around the structure of the harbour and, once all ready, they are lit: the contours of the ancient harbour walls slowly emerge as an endless chain of illuminations. Don’t forget your camera!

5 September2015 The sixth Bridport Hat Festival

Bridport town centre will be taken over by thousands of titfers throughout Saturday, with competitions, trade stalls, food & drink, live acts, some surprises, and a mass hat-wearing photo-op in ‘Bucky Doo’ Square at 1pm.

5 September Guitars on the beach, Lyme Regis

The UK record attempt for the most guitarists all playing one song together was set in 2013 when 2,267 players performed Buddy Holly’s Rave On and again last year when over 3000 people played Status Quo’s Rocking All Over The World and Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water (sung by frontman Ian Gillan). Help make history this year on the Lyme Regis front beach or just come along to watch some serious axe action!

9-17 September Dorset Architectural Heritage Week

This annual event aims to stimulate public awareness of Dorset’s rich architectural and cultural heritage by allowing free access to many properties that are normally closed to the public or charge for entry. This year 20 private eco-homes around West Dorset are being opened to the public, to show how homes can be designed to live more sustainably, using less energy, water and other resources.
